Battle of the Somme

This battle was the first large offensive campaign run by the "new" British Empire forces in WWI.
The Battle of the Somme is remembered for the debut of tanks.
Tactics were developed that enabled the British to win the war. For example, the Creeping Barrage and the first use of tanks were developed in the Battle of the Somme.
Total number of casualties makes it one of the bloodiest battles in human history (over 1 million dead and wounded).
The German army who lost almost all of their highly trained and best soldiers, and that impacted the rest of the war (British losses were mostly poorly trained volunteers).
The Battle of the S
omme was a terrible battle it is still remembered with horror in Britain (and Canada etc) even a century later.
